Final Update!

To all our valued donators, supporters and animal lovers; this is the final update before we close this crowdfunding.

As soon as the funds are being released, the dog houses for the upcoming rainy period will be finished. They will not just provide shelter agains the heavy rain fall, but they will also help us to separate new (and therefor not  yet healthy declared) dogs and dogs that need training from the rest of the pack.

Once again: THANK YOU for making this possible!!

And furthermore: all dogs that haven't been neutered yet will be neutered within a few weeks. We need to thank WEcare in Dickwella, Sri Lanka for making this possible. If you ever get the chance to support this great non-profit organisation: please do so! They are doing the best work with regard to keeping the streets and beaches safe for both humans and animals.

Food will remain being delivered by Ceylon Sea and Gayana and the donation boxes at Heman's Coffeeshop, The Golden Lodge, The Green Garden and the Gayana Shop are slowly filling up, thank you!!

As for the puppies: they all got their Parvo-shots, wurm and skin treatment and they will receive their second rabiës shot on April 7. Pingo, Divine Star and their 3 brothers are doing great and are slowly being introduced to the rest of the pack.

May we present to you: Divine Star!

We are happy to mention, one of the orpan pups has been adopted by Claire Schroijen and Jos Meijs (The Netherlands) by their generous donation. The only girl was chosen by Claire & Jos and she will proudly go by the name Divine Star.  This beauty will get her vaccinations and we sincerely hope she will have a long, happy and healthy life!

Dear, dear Claire & Jos, thank you for your love, compassion and friendship!

Divine Star is now still at the Dog Help Center, getting stronger and more playful every day!

Proud to Introduce... PINGO!

Again we are proud to say THANK YOU to another couple of friends and animal lovers, Frenk van den Heuvel and Vivian Crooijmans, for sponsoring another orphan puppy.

Thank you dear Frenk and Vivian for your great and generous love and support towards (stray) dogs and for naming this little fellow PINGO!

We will make sure Pingo gets his vaccinations and offer him a safe shelter and healthy food.

As for now, Pingo is doing great and he loves to play around and cuddle!

Progress!

We are SO happy to say we are able to make steps because of your generous donations, both online and off line. Thank you once again for that!

First of all; a contractor, Anil Constructions (Tangalle), has visited the property in order to make a quotation for the two most important things; a fence to close the property from the beach and the dog houses.Especially the dog houses are getting more and more important, since rain is coming.

However, all measurements were taken, so at least we can make a quick start with the foundation of the new fence as soon as funds are available. Please keep donating, so Sara will have the opportunity to keep offering these wounded and damaged strays a safe haven!

Besides this, all 8 puppies got their first rabies shots! This includes of course our adopted Divine Star & Pingo. They got their official passport as well last Friday at the vet. All of their next, necessary vaccinations are scheduled as well. Although Divine Star had a little bit of a hard time in the back of the tuktuk (she felt really sick), both did great at the vet and stayed super cool when getting their shots. Proud!

Thank you once again Claire & Jos and Frenk & Vivian! xxx

Don't YOU want to be a proud step-parent and provide one of the other puppies a passport and an identity? It is still possible! Thank you for caring!

Due to the fact the Sri Lankan government restricted social media and therefore our options to share updates and to promote this page: funding extended with 10 more days!

Food Donation!

This week we received some great off-line donations: both Gayana Guest House and the Ceylon Sea Hotel in Tangalle agreed to donate their waste food (rice, vegetables and chicken/fish) to our dogs!

They will from now on collect, separate and freeze left over foods so the shelter will have free foods!

Last Monday the first pick-up, after a wedding buffet, was collected, washed and re-cooked at the property. Especially the pups, who are just getting off puppy milk, had to try a little different taste, but in the end they loved it!

Tomorrow, on Friday, another pick-up will be arranged. Besides their generous food donations, Gayana and the Ceylon Sea are together with our friends from Golden Lodge, Green Garden en Heman's Coffee shop, the locations where our first handcrafted donation boxes found a position on the counter.

Thank you dear Sri Lankan friends!!!

Fresh, Free Food!

Sara's Dog Help Association urgently needs YOUR help!

In Ranna, located in the Southern province of the beautiful island of Sri Lanka, are 46 rescued dogs in urgent need. The Italian Adele Rozaria (Sara) has successfully been rescuing Sri Lankan stray dogs for over 13 years. Until a little while ago, Sara's love, compassion, personal funds and the support of great volunteers and friends could do the job. However, her success and fame in the region are now becoming her downfall. With an increasing amount of dogs, it is getting impossible for Sara to finance and nurture all of them. With the dumping of 6 puppies in a plastic bag in front of the gate of her Dog Help Association, the situation recently got worse. Also Sara is turning 66 years old this summer, so it's getting more and more difficult to manage all the dogs, volunteers and the property by herself. Hiring staff became inevitable, her fence was destroyed and several personal and natural disasters occurred in the past couple of years. Despite all her efforts and the support of some great volunteers and friends, Sara can't do it alone anymore. And the number of sick, wounded, abused and molested stray dogs is increasing... Financial support is what's needed to continue taking care of the current 46 dogs and hopefully more!

This little fellow we encountered on the beach recently. If there wasn't such an urgent need to keep the current inhabitants of the Sara Dog Help Association alive, we would have taken him and his 4 siblings in as well. Of course they are not the only ones; there are hundreds of puppies and dogs like this, full with ticks and itches, wandering along the beaches and through the streets of Sri Lanka, looking for a safe place to rest, desperately seeking for food or water and hoping not to be beaten or otherwise abused or injured.

The greater part of puppies like this doesn't survive their first year...

Therefore, it is not just necessary to safe the dogs, it's perhaps even more important to create awareness about what's going on and what needs to be done. Stray dogs, both male and female, need to be neutered so the dogs will stop reproducing themselves so fast. They need to be healthy and happy, not just because they have the right to be, but also because of the health of humans in Sri Lanka. Annually, 20 to 30 people succumb to rabies. Especially children are at greatest risk of getting rabies.

"These innocent souls need to be safed, they are capable of giving unconditional love and friendship. Therefore, we need to respect them and respect their right to have a life, just like all other living creatures."  (Sara)

Who are we?

We (the fundraisers), Patrick Stritzko & Dominique Heemels, are always looking for chances to contribute to a better world. Not only in our work, we've also been involved in several voluntary projects and causes such as Amnesty International, local projects for the eldery and the disabled or people in need of social contacts.

When we got in touch with Sara in 2016, we wanted to contribute and agreed on coming to Sri Lanka to help on a voluntary base. Hands on help, that's what we thought. And that's what we do. However, we rapidly noticed, helping hands are not doing the job anymore. As we are, from a business point of view, used to analyse a situation and rapidly inventarise what is needed, we came to the conclusion hard work is no longer enough. Great ideas and dreams are not enough. To realise ideas and rescue plans, to substantially build a safe haven for the rescued ones and to decrease the amount of molested, sick and injured stray dogs are two things needed: funds and awareness.

The great amount of suffering stray dogs in the region (and all over Sri Lanka) and Sara need financial support to continue the great work Sara started. As the situation is now, the 46 dogs in Sara's help center have been rescued before, but need to be rescued again.

So, that's why we're calling out to you, our family and friends, all friends and family in their networks and all animal lovers in the world. Your help is greatly appreciated, no matter how big or small your donation is. Sara, her dogs, friends and volunteers (including us) of the Association are extremely grateful for your compassion.

Sara's Story

In 1999, Sara visited Sri Lanka for the very first time. At that time, she was already thinking of having a second home in a country where she could be meaningful to the ones who needed it the most. She didn't need a lot of time to decide the place to be was Sri Lanka. And she was going to do set up an orphanage for all the orphans in the Southern Province of Sri Lanka.

When she first saw the hidden by jungle beach front property in Kahandamodora, Ranna, Sara felt she had found paradise on Earth. This was the place where she would begin building the orphinage she wanted to start. Things went different, however. The building of the house, a minor version of the family house she grew up in in Sicily, started in June 2004. On December 26 of this year a tsunami hit the south coast of Sri Lanka and it’s inhabitants in a horrific way.

Ten thousands of people and families were killed, including a great part of the orphans in the region which were about to find a home in Sara’s orphanage.

After this natural disaster, many more sad, dissappointing and fearful things occurred in Sara’s life. She got disappointed in human beings, but never lost her faith in God and the conviction innocent souls need our help. So when she took in her first dog, an Indian Wolf, she decided to dedicate her life to the stray dogs of Sri Lanka. After all; dogs love you unconditionally if you take good care of them. Many dogs have come and gone in the past 13 years, some died in a sad way despite all the efforts of the Sara Dog Help Association, but the greater part of the dogs recovered from their severe injuries and bad conditions and they are living a happy, healthy life at the Sara Dog Help Association.

GOAL

So, why did we decide to give fundraising a try?

Well: during all the years Sara is running her Dog Help Association, all her love, time and funds went to the dogs. Due to the increasing number of dogs also expenses are increasing; food, medical care, skin care, staff needed to be hired, and so on. There was nothing left to proceed with the original plans for years, but now it's a daily struggle to even feed all dogs. Especially since it's almost time to renew vaccinations for the greater part of the dogs as well as for the puppies.

There are actually plans to open the center for people, so they can come and have a look for themselves or to play with the dogs on the beach. There are even plans and permits for accommodation close to or at the property for volunteers for example. This isn't possible at the moment. Not by far. The house itself is still not finished, neither are the dog houses and the washing place.

You can imagine much more money is needed than what we are asking for here. However, first things first.

That means: food, puppy milk, a new fence (to replace the one that has been destroyed) to secure the property from the beach, dog houses, vaccinations for the new bornes and donation boxes for collecting funds locally.

Although both materials and labor are not as expensive in Sri Lanka as it is in Europe, the costs are considerably.

Fence, approx. 45 meters:

- concrete foundation

- metal poles

- garden mesh

- gate/doors

- labour

Dog houses, including a washing place:

- concrete foundation + bricks

- mesh or wire welding

- roofing

- gutter

- sceptic tank

- labour

Dog accessories

- leashes

- skin care products

- towels, soap.....

Since it has come so far, the need is extremely high and Sara is getting more and more anxious about the situation, we set this goal for a  short period of time... Every donation, no matter how big or small is SO welcome! After this, we'll find a way to continue. For sure we won't leave them to their fate and we will continue fighting for their lives and the lives of all stray dogs around.

Also: if you  are around Kahandamodora; don't hesitate to visit the Sara Dog Help Association! If you prefer to donate in another way.... you're mostly welcome!

Why help?

We prefer to share happy news. To show you the puppies that were dumped more dead than alive in front of the gate, but who are now playing around and growing up healthy. However, the horrific stories are still there. Some dogs will carry the scarves and visible memories forever. To make this stop, confrontation is inevitable.

This is Ella, named after the mountain village in Sri Lanka where she was found.

She was beaten with a stick so badly, she couldn't stand on her feet anymore. The perpetrators throwed her on the rocks to let her die...

Thank God some tourist witnessed this torture and contacted the Sara Dog Help Association.

She was taken to a vet in Matara, who told Sara she had to give up on this one; Ella would most probably die within hours, maybe days.

Sara maintained hope and faith and gave Ella all the TLC she needed. And a miracle happened: Ella recovered!

Fourty days after she was found, she was fully recovered and looking healthy. Still, now a year later, Ella is running, sunbathing and playing around at Sara's property in Kahandamodora.

 This is Baba.

Baba was, like many dogs in Sri Lanka, attacked with fire by people who either wanted to chase him away from a place or, even worse, just 'for fun'. Unfortunately, this still happens too often.

Baba was found in a really bad condition and in an awful lot of pain. Sara took him in and treated his wounds with all the love and care she has to give. Although the healing process was long and painful and the scar (and memory) will last forever, Baba has found a safe haven at the Sara Dog Help Association. He is healthy and happy, but his scars daily remind us about all the other dogs suffering and dying from injuries like this, caused by human beings...

"Please donate, we're just the voice of their cry out for help!"

So, once again, it doesn't matter how big or small your donation is, it is heartwarming to know there are many more people in the world who believe ALL living creatures on this earth have the right to live freely and healthy. We fully understand there are also a lot of people suffering and living under difficult circumstances, especially in Sri Lanka, but our four-legged friends can not ask for help, neither are they causing the sometimes hard or difficult situations for human beings. Situations like sickness because of rabies on human beings can be PREVENTED by humans by treating and taking care of the dogs.

See, it's all in our hands...

Thank you so much for supporting us!!
